Review by Thomas D. Ryan "American Hit Network" : New Re-Release Package

If you were to judge only by sales, then this is the album that justified R.E.M.'s move to Warner Brothers Records, since "Out of Time" is the first R.E.M. album to reach #1. "Losing My Religion" was certainly their best single to date, and the power of their new major label affiliation also made sure that it was also their best-selling (for a full-length review of this song, proceed to the end of this listing). If truth be told, this album is also their most inconsistent. High points like "Losing My Religion", "Texarkana", "Half a World Away" and "Country Feedback" are offset by semi-realized efforts like "Shiny Happy People" (a top ten hit in its own right, proving that many, many people disagree with me here), "Endgame" or "Low". When compared with the `hair-metal' that passed for `rock and roll' back in 1991, though, this album sounds like a work of genius. From just about any angle, the good far outweighs the ordinary (nothing here is bad per se), and by the time the album raps up with Michael Stipe and Kate Pierson (of the B-52s, who appears on 3 tracks here) harmonizing on the uplifting "Me in Honey," it is impossible to deny the charms of being "Out of Time." Ok funny story behind this one. My mom got me this album in 1991, I was 12 years old. I listened to Losing My Religion, and Shiny Happy People twice, amd then it ended up in a box for the next few years. Being 12 years old i wasnt a very good judge of brilliance. I forgot about the album until I found it in a suit case a few years ago. I kind of needed some money so I thought Id try and sell it. However, the CD was badly scratched, so no one would buy it. I decided to take it home and listen to it. Since I had matured a little, the lyrics started making sense, and I loved it! I bought Green and Automatic For the People soon after. Stipe is a true artist, And He is priceless in this day of Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears. Stipe shows that music can be fun and still convey a message at the same time.

Review by John D. Pride : A Perfect "Time" Capsule

Adhering to the still-true adage that the very best records perfectly capture a time and feeling, and can still recreate that place and moment upon each listening, "Out Of Time" succeeds as another of those REM records that returns you to the best of an era. The idea of music sounding "dated" is ridiculous to me. Music is the soundtrack to your life, and should never be so generic as to simply to fit in to any decade, year or trend. "Out of Time" stands as the testament to the public in general of what the fans had known since before "Chronic Town"; that REM was, and is, America's best band.
